and some ponderings... I'm a cartoonist!(?)
hello!
I present to you: a single paneler.
That’s it. It speaks for itself, and for once, I’ll let it!
some ponderings… i’m a cartoonist!
I have been considering the age old question: what is the difference between cartoons and comics?
From my “research” (ok I googled it, I will not be citing my “sources”), cartoons are usually one panel and both the writing and the art is created by one person. Comics are usually multiple panels and created by a writer and illustrator working together.
When I consider what I think of when I think of these titles.. well, I am not sure. I like “cartoons” best for what I make, but I fear that it is a confusing title. It sounds like it could mean cartoons in the way animations are cartoons i.e. SpongeBob SquarePants. But I am making cartoons in the Gary Larson, Stephan Pastis, etc. still-image way.
“Funnies” while it feels kind of right, doesn’t sound quite right enough, I think because not all of my pieces are necessarily “funny” and also “funnies” isn’t as frequently used as “comics” and “cartoons”. In other words, would someone have an idea of what funnies even is come to mind when they hear it? I make funnies doesn’t sound like it means anything, and if anything, sounds like I make jokes and am saying that in a quirky way.
I want to say “I am a cartoonist”. Maybe I’ll start testing that one out when people ask about what kind of art I make.
That is about all for my pondering for today.
What do you think when you think of comics, cartoons, funnies?
Wrapping it up
As always, thank you so much for seeing my art and thank you so much for reading.
I’ll be drawing and pondering and testing out my new title on whoever may ask.
Until next time,
Han
